Welcoming Pete Carmichael to lead Calwell operations

Port Nelson is pleased to welcome Pete Carmichael as Calwell Site Manager, leading the newly developed marine haul-out and maintenance facility.

Pete brings extensive marine, operational and leadership experience to the role, most recently serving as Deputy Harbour Master at Nelson City Council. In this position, he was responsible for navigational safety across Nelson’s regional waters, working closely with stakeholders to ensure compliance and best-practice safety systems.

Prior to this, Pete spent several years with the International Maritime Institute of New Zealand, coordinating and delivering maritime training. Earlier in his career, he worked internationally as a captain and engineer on charter yachts throughout the Mediterranean, leading vessel operations, crew management, safety, and major refits.

At Calwell, Pete will oversee the slipway, hardstand and mobile boat hoist facility. Pete’s appointment comes at a key time, as the site transitions into full operational delivery. “This role brings together everything I enjoy about working in the marine environment,” says Pete. “It’s a great opportunity to build capability, support the team, and establish strong, safe operations from day one.”

In his first weeks, Pete has focused on understanding the site, building relationships, and setting a strong foundation for the team. Looking ahead, his priority is to ensure the Calwell site delivers for customers.
